Wisconsin had said 80 jobs were in jeopardy

Only 12 workers are losing their jobs because a high-speed rail project was canceled, far less than the 80 layoffs predicted by outgoing Gov. Jim Doyle's administration, state and corporate representatives say.

Job losses have been a major issue for supporters of the aborted plan to link Milwaukee and Madison with 110-mph passenger trains. Doyle, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and other backers say the federally funded $810 million project would have created thousands of jobs.

The route would have extended Amtrak's existing Milwaukee-to-Chicago Hiawatha line to Madison. It eventually could have been extended to the Twin Cities, as part of a Midwestern network of fast, frequent trains.

But canceling the rail line was a key plank in the platform of Governor-elect Scott Walker, who defeated Barrett in the Nov. 2 gubernatorial race. Walker said he didn't want state taxpayers to pick up operating costs of $7.5 million a year, after fare revenue, although revised ridership projections could have cut the taxpayer share by $2.8 million and the state could have used federal funds to cover most of the cost.

After Walker was elected, Doyle froze work on the route. The U.S. Department of Transportation later withdrew nearly all of the $810 million stimulus grant and redistributed the money to other states' train projects.
The week after the election, Doyle said stopping the rail project would cost the state 412 jobs in the near future.

But about 330 of those jobs had not yet been created. They were potential jobs at companies that had either been awarded contracts but had not yet started work, or that would have won contracts not yet awarded.

That left about 80 people who were already working on the project and whose jobs were in jeopardy, according to state officials. Of those, 70 were employed at HNTB Corp. and CH2M Hill, two major engineering firms active in planning the rail line.

HNTB spokeswoman Sara Prem said ending the project "has had no significant impact" on the Kansas City-based firm's employment.

And at CH2M Hill, "We are working very hard to redeploy our staff to other projects. We do not expect to lay off employees at this time," said John Corsi, spokesman for the Colorado-based firm.

In November, a representative of DAAR Engineering said the Milwaukee firm laid off two employees after Doyle suspended work on the job.

The remaining 10 workers are at the state Department of Transportation. They are in the process of wrapping up the project and are expected to be laid off sometime in January, said Cari Anne Renlund, executive assistant to state Transportation Secretary Frank Busalacchi.

At its peak in 2012, the rail project was expected to create 4,732 direct jobs in construction, at supply companies and in government, with 55 permanent jobs after service started in 2013.

Among the potential suppliers was Talgo Inc., the Spanish train manufacturer with a new plant on Milwaukee's north side.

The company is producing two trains for the Hiawatha and two trains for Oregon. It had hoped to hire 125 people if the state exercised an option for two more trains to extend service to Madison.

But after the project was canceled, Talgo said it would end production after finishing its existing work in early 2012, then convert its factory into a maintenance base for the Hiawatha trains. Talgo plans to cap hiring at 65 to avoid laying anyone off in the transition from manufacturing to maintenance.
Rail supporters say hundreds, if not thousands, more jobs would have been created by the project's spinoff economic effects. That impact is harder to measure reliably, however. A Madison businessman has dropped plans for a restaurant near that city's planned train station.

In another development, an attempt to send Walker an open letter from business leaders critical of losing the federal funds has collapsed because Republicans refused to sign it, an organizer said.

A bipartisan group of local communications professionals, led by public relations executives Jason Lusk and Christel Henke, had circulated the letter, telling the Republican governor-elect that signers are "gravely disappointed over the loss of $810 million that could have been invested in our state," along with the loss of jobs and track improvements for freight rail.

The letter also urged "greater thoughtfulness, civility, creativity and compromise in the future" than the rail debate displayed.

But Lusk said GOP rail supporters - even some who helped draft the letter - backed out of signing it.

Some called the letter "too strident" toward Walker, while "others told us they were concerned that criticizing Governor-elect Walker would harm their efforts to bid on state projects," Lusk said by e-mail.

"In the end, we were left with a few dozen signatures, many from Democratic supporters, none from outspoken Republicans."

With that split mirroring the election debate, in which Democrats such as Doyle and Barrett attacked Walker's stand, the letter lost its original meaning, Lusk wrote.

He said his group's members "will continue to advocate forcefully for Milwaukee's business community to engage the new administration with an independent voice."

DREAM Act Vote May Take Place After Thanksgiving!

Yesterday afternoon Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairwoman, Rep. NydiaVelazquez (D-NY), announced that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has tentatively set a vote on the DREAM Act as soon as November 29th! (Capital Wire PR, Nov. 16, 2010)

During her announcement at the Latino Leaders Network luncheon, Rep. Velazquez called for all Americans to contact their Congressmen to urge passage of the DREAM Act. (Id.) According to the latest reports from Capitol Hill, Democratic House leaders may even be so desperate as to amend the DREAM Act to the Help Haiti Act of 2010 (HR 5283)—a bill that grants green cards to about 1,400 Haitian orphans while they are in the process of being adopted by Americans. (CQ Today, Nov. 17, 2010)

FAIR estimates that 2-3 MILLION illegal aliens will be eligible for amnesty under the DREAM Act. The DREAM Act:

Grants illegal aliens “conditional” permanent resident status upon the receipt of a high school diploma, or simply enrollment in a college program or the military;
Grants these aliens normal LPR status (green cards) upon finishing two years of college or service in the military—requirements the Obama Administration can WAIVE.
Authorizes states to give illegal aliens in-state tuition so that your tax dollars will openly be subsidizing illegal immigration; and
Makes newly amnestied aliens eligible for numerous taxpayer-funded student loan programs.

Although touted by its sponsors as a way to give illegal alien children a pathway to citizenship, in reality, the House version of the DREAM Act has NO AGE LIMIT (H.R. 1571). Moreover, once illegal aliens receive amnesty they will be able (at the age of 21) to petition the federal government to bring in their parents, siblings, and other family members.

Call your Representatives NOW and tell them that you want our immigration laws enforced, not another amnesty that encourages more illegal immigration. Tell them:

The DREAM Act rewards those who broke U.S. immigration laws and only encourages more illegal immigration;
The DREAM Act unfairly allows illegal alien students to tap federal and state benefits, when those benefits are desperately needed by Americans who are struggling every day to make ends meet.

The open borders lobby is counting on you to be distracted during the Thanksgiving holiday so that they can pass this amnesty bill as soon as Congress returns! Please act now and continue to reach out to your Representatives next week while they are home in their districts. The GOP will gain 4 seats in the State Senate and gain control (they needed a gain of 2). Among those defeated was Majority Leader Russ Decker. The new senate will be 19-14 Republican.

The GOP will gain 14 seats in the State Assembly and gain control (they needed a gain of 4). Among those defeated was Speaker Mike Sheridon. The new Assembly will be 60-39 Republican with at least 3 GOP wins subject to a re-count.

Republican Reid Ribble unseats Democrat Steve Kagen in 8th Congressional District race

Republican newcomer Reid Ribble faced a roaring crowd Tuesday night as the results of the midterm elections became clear — on a wave of anger with incumbents and the sluggish economy, the GOP took control of Congress and statewide offices in Wisconsin and across the country.

Like many winners in the 2010 midterm election, Ribble entered Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional race as someone new to politics and elections without any previous experience in elected office. The GOP backed a wave of unknown first-timers to help take the U.S. House, close the gap in the U.S. Senate and add more governorships to their ranks.

“I think there’s a message being sent to President (Barack) Obama, quite frankly, that (voters) felt the government overreached and now we want you not to reach so far,” said Ribble, who moved from Kaukauna to the town of Lawrence to run in the 8th Congressional District against incumbent Democrat Steve Kagen.

Ribble defeated two-time incumbent Kagen, D-Appleton, grabbing 55 percent of the vote. With all but one of 432 precincts counted, Ribble had 144,288 votes to 118,617 for Kagen (45 percent).

After voting Democrat in every presidential election since 1988, Wisconsin looked more red than blue on Tuesday. Voters ushered in a new group of Republicans into the governor’s mansion with the election of Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker. The party also picked up seats in the U.S. Senate and two Congressional seats.

Ribble joined Republican Ron Johnson, another fresh face with more experience in business than politics, in decisive wins Tuesday night.

Johnson, owner of a manufacturing company in Oshkosh, easily unseated Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Middleton, who will walk away from Washington after 18 years in the upper chamber with recent polls showing he’s still popular in Wisconsin. As of press time, Johnson had 54 percent of the statewide vote with 57 percent of precincts counted.

While Walker had considerable more political experience than Ribble and Johnson, he effectively tapped into the same “less taxes, smaller government” mantra that Republicans nationwide ran on to take the governor’s office being vacated by Democrat Jim Doyle.

Walker easily defeated Barrett with 52 percent of the vote and 69 percent of precincts reported thanks to a party that rallied following a contested primary. After Walker defeated Mark Neumann the two worked together to help bridge together areas where Neumann out performed Walker, including much of Northeast Wisconsin. Walker garnered 56 percent of the vote in Brown County on Tuesday.

But it wasn’t a clean sweep for the GOP. Though Republican Sean Duffy won the 7th Congressional seat long held by Democrat Dave Obey over Julie Lassa, Democrat Ron Kind staved off serious opposition from Republican Dan Kapanke to hold the 3rd District.

Still, the victory was decisive, and Republicans that threw darts from the outside for the past two years will now have significant leveraging power in Congress and state capitols nationwide.

“I do know this: this is going to be a pretty healthy mandate. If the house flips 45 or 50 seats, there’s a message that’s being sent to the other side, and that is we want something different,” Ribble said. “We want a government that will reach across the aisle. This type of rhetoric where the Republicans can sit in the back and all that kind of stuff, that stuff’s got to end.”

Wisconsin only state where Democrats lost governor, Senate seat, Legislature

On a night when America turned from blue to red, few states swung harder than Wisconsin, where Republicans experienced their greatest electoral gains in decades, picking up a governor, Democrat Russ Feingold's U.S. Senate seat, both state legislative chambers and two U.S. House seats.

A battleground state that Barack Obama dominated two years ago dealt him and his party a sharp political rebuke Tuesday, as Democrats lost ground with one key voting group after another - independents, blue-collar whites, suburbanites.

Nationally, the GOP recaptured the U.S. House and whittled away at the Democrats' big Senate majority, transforming both the balance of power in Washington and the electoral map heading into the 2012 election for president.

Here in Wisconsin, Republicans gained a governor and U.S. senator in the same election for the first time since 1938. This was the only state in the country where Democrats lost the governorship, a Senate seat and an entire legislature.

Wisconsin has now had two back-to-back elections in which each party won historically large victories - a sign of the volatility of the times, of the economic turmoil of the region, and of a swing electorate that neither side can take for granted.

Two years ago, Democrats achieved their biggest presidential win in Wisconsin since 1964. Obama carried more counties in Wisconsin than any other state, painting the state blue from city to suburb to countryside.
This year, Republicans had their best midterm election in 72 years.

Was this simply another "no" vote against the party in power, much like rejection of Republicans in 2006 and 2008?

Or were voters making a more conservative statement about government overreach?

There were signs of both in this election.

If the exit polls are correct, this was a distinctly more conservative electorate than the one four years ago that re-elected a Democratic governor, Jim Doyle.

It also was an electorate shaped by economic discontent and political dissatisfaction, with a bare majority of Wisconsin voters disapproving of the Obama presidency, and 63% dissatisfied or angry about the way the federal government is working.

The economy was overwhelmingly the top concern of voters; nothing else was close. And much like two years ago, nine out of 10 Wisconsin voters said they were worried about the direction of the nation's economy next year.

The result was something easily recognizable to Republicans this summer and fall, because they'd been on the opposite end of the same frustration and unhappiness. "It's just like '08 and '06 - in reverse," said state GOP chair Reince Priebus last month.

Tuesday's election cost two Democratic incumbents their jobs (Sen. Feingold and U.S. Rep. Steve Kagen of Green Bay), launched new Republican careers (Senate victor Ron Johnson and congressional winners Sean Duffy of Ashland and Reid Ribble of Neenah), elevated Scott Walker to a high-profile Midwestern governorship, and gave one of the GOP's ascendant national figures (Rep. Paul Ryan of Janesville) a major new platform in the national debate. Ryan will become the budget chair in the GOP-controlled House, where he's expected to play a central role in the tug-of-war between the parties over spending, taxes, and the size and role of government.

Both of the Democrats at the top of the ticket, Feingold and gubernatorial candidate Tom Barrett, lost ground with key swing constituencies that favored Obama two years ago: suburbanites, blue-collar whites, political independents.

One of those groups, blue-collar white voters (those without college degrees), looms especially large in Wisconsin, making up 55% of the electorate Tuesday. Democrats cannot do well statewide in Wisconsin without performing well with this group. Obama won these voters in Wisconsin in 2008, winning 52%. But on Tuesday, Feingold won only 41% and Barrett only 40% of these voters.

The exit polls suggested that the electorate in Wisconsin was more conservative than the one four years ago but a little less conservative than some pre-election polling suggested it would be. Self-described conservatives made up 36% of the total vote, higher than the 27% of four years ago, but not as high as in 1994, when they made up 42% of the Wisconsin vote.

Democratic and Republican voters turned out in roughly equal numbers.

That was also a change from four years ago, when Democratic voters were 38% of the total vote and Republicans 34%.

Change is biggest factor

But it was more than just the makeup of the electorate that shaped the outcome Tuesday. Shifts in public sentiment were key to the GOP victories. In this election, the change agents were the Republicans, not the Democrats.

The exit polls showed that almost a third of the voters in the U.S. Senate race cited change as the biggest factor in their vote, and they broke for Republican Johnson 3-to-1.

This was the first time in Wisconsin since 1980 that more than one incumbent member of Congress lost in the same election, and the first time since the mid-'90s that Republicans won a majority of the state's congressional delegation.

Almost half of Wisconsin voters (45%) favored repeal of the new health care law, according to the exit polls, and those voters overwhelmingly chose the Republican candidates for governor and U.S. senator.

Tea party supporters modestly outnumbered tea party opponents (37% to 32%) among Wisconsin voters, the exit polls showed. (Just under 30% said they were neutral).

And asked whether they think government should do more to solve problems or is doing too many things better left to individuals and businesses, 56% of Wisconsin voters said government is doing too much, while 41% said it should do more.

In traveling the distance from deep blue in 2008 to bright red in 2010, Wisconsin swung more dramatically than most states Tuesday, but it had company, especially amid the economic unease of the industrial Midwest.

Republicans made gains across the board in the region, including in states that are leading presidential battlegrounds: Ohio, Iowa, Michigan.

As a result, Obama will be campaigning throughout the Midwest in 2012 in states led largely by Republican governors, not Democratic governors.

And if anyone thought that Wisconsin, after giving Obama a blowout, 14-point victory in 2008, was no longer a true presidential battleground, this election will come as a corrective. The success of the GOP ensures that Republicans, as did George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004, will have Wisconsin in its crosshairs in 2012, knowing that it's a state Democrats cannot afford to lose if they hope to win a second term for Obama.

The Lakeland Area Republican Women's Club along with the Republican Women of the North held a joint meeting today in St. Germain at the Bear's Den of Black Bear Lodge. Ron Johnson's daughters Carey and Jenna were attendance and spoke to us about their dad's campaign, recent debates, and thanked us all for our support and efforts to get out the vote for Johnson this Nov 2. Dan Meyer's wife Karen along with their daughter Amanda were also in attendance and spoke about all Dan's campaigning efforts and thanked our clubs for supporting Dan Meyer's campaign. Jim Knuth also shared some comments about 8th Congressional District candidate Reid Ribble and urged all of us to support his campaign as well.

LT Governor Candidate Kleefisch shares motivational cancer story

Dear Friends,

About two and a half weeks before I became Scott Walker’s running mate, my life changed. No doubt my life changed the night of the primary, too, but what happened before is something I want to share with you.

Statewide campaigns are a rigorous business. I had traveled Wisconsin time and time again getting to know you. I was eating on the run, drinking a lot of coffee, and keeping a demanding schedule. My excuse for exercise was 8 consecutive Independence Day parades!

That’s why, when I started having stomach cramps and feeling tired, I blamed it on my schedule. I went to my doctor a couple of times and he agreed that I probably needed a lifestyle adjustment after the election.

A few weeks before the primary, I told my doctor that I was sick. Not just campaign-sick. Really sick. He ordered some blood tests and called me with the results. He wanted to know how I was feeling.

“Fine,” I told him.

The test results were not as fine. He said that I was bleeding somewhere, that I might have an ulcer and that I needed an endoscopy right away, and probably a blood transfusion. I hung up the phone and got back behind the camera to shoot my “Mom with a Minivan” ad.

I didn’t want a blood transfusion.

The next day, I had an endoscopy that revealed no ulcer, but instead of being excited, my doctor told me I needed a colonoscopy the next morning.

It was August 26th. Two and a half weeks before the primary I woke up from my colonoscopy to my doctor telling me, “Becky… you have colon cancer, but, 9 years ago I was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer, and I’m here to tell you about it.”

He was like an angel, giving me the bad along with hope. He refused to guess what stage the cancer was.

Eight years earlier, my dad died of pancreatic cancer, and I was so thankful the doctor hadn’t said “pancreatic cancer.” Regardless of the stage, I knew I could beat colon cancer. I went straight to get a CT scan and transfusion.

That weekend I researched my disease and the treatments available. I found the best colorectal cancer surgeon around: Dr. Kirk Ludwig. He was internationally renowned and taught others how to remove colon cancer laparoscopically. He was at Froedert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin…amazingly, just 30 minutes away.

I saw him Monday morning. My tumor was the size of a grapefruit, he said. When I asked whether he would still be able to take it out laparoscopically, he said it wouldn’t be a problem.

“And in ten years…?” I said.

“In ten years, you’ll look back on this and say, ‘Oh, that wasn’t so fun.’ And that’s it.”

The next day when I went for genetic testing I started bleeding and was admitted Wednesday. Thursday morning, around the same time I got my diagnosis the previous week, the cancer was gone.

Dr. Ludwig sent my tumor to pathologists to determine the stage of the disease. After I had been home for a day, he called with the results: despite the fact that the tumor had broken through my colon wall and was creeping up my side, despite the fact that it looked like it had compromised lymph nodes, all the nodes tested negative. I had survived Stage 2 cancer. It was like a miracle.

Last week, the genetic test results finally came. “No mutation detected” they said. I will not pass this on to my daughters. Another miracle.

I’m telling you because perhaps you’ve been touched by cancer. If you have, you know that the stories of hope, of beating it, are the ones you hold on to. Just like my doctor awakened me with a story of hope, I hope you will share my story with someone who needs it.

My story also illustrates how dire my future might have been if we had socialized medicine. What if the government had told me I had to wait in a 6 month line to get a CT scan? Or that I couldn’t have Dr. Ludwig perform the surgery? That’s unacceptable to me and my family.

So please hug your family tonight and be thankful for your blessings. I have a renewed gratefulness for each day. And please join me in fighting for healthcare reform that keeps us in charge of our choices. After a hard-fought primary and cancer, Tom Barrett doesn’t seem very scary.

The Krauthammer-Rove Axis of Disdain, By Lee Cary

Washington Post columnist and FOX News contributor Charles Krauthammer has joined Karl Rove, the consigliere of Establishment Republicans, in a continuing attack on GOP Delaware senatorial candidate Christine O'Donnell. Some longtime fans of Krauthammer are surely startled and saddened by his sustained assault on O'Donnell since she won the primary race against Mike Castle.

As has Rove, Krauthammer is invoking the "Buckley Rule." It was born in 1967, when William F. Buckley was asked whom he would support, Barry Goldwater or Richard Nixon, in the GOP primary for the 1968 Presidential election. Buckley said he'd vote for the most conservative candidate who was electable. That was Nixon.

In his September 17, 2010 column, Krauthammer essentially declared O'Donnell unelectable -- he said she has a one-in-ten chance to be elected -- and accused Sen. Jim DeMint and Sarah Palin of being "reckless and irresponsible" by endorsing her. Krauthammer also criticized Sharron Angle, running against Harry Reid in Nevada, as a weak candidate, although he has not yet declared her defeated before the votes are counted.

Meanwhile, Washington Post staff writer Amy Gardner titled her article posted after the O'Donnell victory "O'Donnell's victory in Del. highlights tension in tea party groups." She may wish that's the most significant "tension" at play here, but it's not.

The fulcrum of the GOP internal debate is obviously between establishment Republicans and the conservative upstarts -- upstarts in the eyes of the GOP's establishment. And what's at issue is ideological control of the party. The establishment heralds victory as the overriding prize that trumps ideology and principle. It's what all establishments do. It's in their DNA. It's about self-preservation. They can't help it.

The Bush 42 campaign used the term "compassionate conservative" to counter the Democrat-designed image aimed to paint Republicans as insensitive and uncaring toward all but the rich. It helped get Bush elected, but what it meant was never clear. In retrospect, it's now obvious that it was never about ideology; it was all about marketing. No surprise there. It's the nature of campaigns, or at least it was until the hardcore ideologues of the Left took over Congress and the White House. In opposition to the Leftists, conservative principles are not an expendable option. Political expediency works only in battles with other expedient mentalities. Hardcore socialists eat relativist politicians for lunch, as they did in 1933 Germany.

When President George W. Bush said, during the advent of TARP, that, "I've abandoned free market principles to save the free market system," conservative Republicans all across the country looked at each other and said, "What did he just say?" It was a Gestalt moment for some. "Where did his principles go?" we asked. Then some wondered, "Were they ever there in the first place?"

The recent and ongoing rant of Rove against O'Donnell provides context to understand "compassionate conservative" and Bush's "free market principles" statement. In retrospect, it also frames the domestic political failures of the Bush presidency. According to "Bush's brain," expediency trumps ideology. It's all about winning power.

Now, sadly, Charles Krauthammer has joined Rove in essentially calling the Republican voters of Delaware stupid. The only possible upside of all this is that the comments of both men may throw gasoline on the enthusiasm of O'Donnell supporters and win new ones for her.

We've yet to see how well Mike Castles loses. Several recent GOP establishment losers in primary races have not been good losers. Senator Lisa Murkowski last night announced a write-in effort in Alaska after losing the GOP primary to newcomer Joe Miller. Florida Governor Charlie Crist is running as a third-party candidate after losing the primary to Marco Rubio. Will Mike Castle endorse Christine O'Donnell or support the man that Harry Reid called his "pet" Democrat candidate, Chris Coons? Will Castle "pull a Murkowski" and run as a write-in?

Politicians, columnists, and consultants most closely associated with the GOP establishment are feeling disoriented these days as the levers of control over their party move out of their reach and, more and more, into the hands of rank amateurs, or those they perceive to be amateurs. The old guard is feeling...threatened.

In making his case for the Buckley Rule, Krauthammer said this during the "FOX News All Stars" discussion on September 15:

I think Senator DeMint is wrong when he says "I'd rather have a party that believes in something and not a party that doesn't." Well, the party he is in in the Senate right now -- the forty Senators believe in something, and it's stopping the Obama agenda.

Ironically, the day after Krauthammer spoke, the Senate passed the $30-billion Small Business Jobs Act supported by President Barack Obama by a vote of 61-38. Republican Senators George Voinovich of Ohio and George LeMieux of Florida broke the Republican filibuster and voted for the bill. Up went the deficit. So much for united Republican senators "stopping the Obama agenda."

There's an historical precedent for what's happening. Although some dispute it, tradition says that on October 19, 1781, as eight thousand men under the command of British General Cornwallis at Yorktown marched out to surrender to the Continental Army, the British band played a tune appropriate for the unexpected turn in events that brought defeat to the world's strongest army. The song was entitled "The World Turned Upside Down."

What is more widely accepted about that day is that the British soldiers surrendered with composure and dignity. And the Colonists accepted their surrender in the same style. According to an eyewitness account, among the victors, "You could not have heard a whisper or seen the least motion throughout our whole line, but every countenance was erect, and expressed a serene cheerfulness."

Guess what could be coming to a paycheck near you?

Some of the largest tax increases in American history, by almost all objective analyses, unless Congress acts.
Federal tax hikes set to take effect in 2011 would hit virtually every working American, regardless of the level of household income.

Because of the protracted health care debate this past year, many citizens missed the words and actions - in some cases, inactions - of the Obama administration and Congress on taxes, so here's a summary of the changes scheduled to take place next year.

That's when most of the so-called Bush tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 are set to expire, and neither the Obama administration nor Democratic congressional leaders have appeared eager to extend them, especially for higher income citizens.

If Congress does nothing, personal income tax rates are going to climb for everyone who pays taxes. The top income rate would increase from 35 percent to 39.6 percent (those making more than $379,650), but the percentage jump is even larger for the lowest tax bracket.

The 10-percent tax bracket, for instance, would vanish and those people would move into the 15-percent bracket, a 50-percent jump. That bracket would apply to everyone with incomes below $34,550.

Others bracket moves are more moderate: the 25-percent bracket rises to 28 percent; the 28-percent bracket, to 31; the 33-percent bracket, to 36.

The phase-out of many itemized deductions and of the personal exemption would resume as well, helping to further boost taxes.

And that's not all.

The child tax credit would be reduced from $1,000 per child to $500 per child, while the so-called "marriage penalty" - the difference between what you pay in taxes as a married couple and what you would pay as two single persons making about the same amount - will make a comeback.

The standard deduction would no longer be doubled for married couples relative to the single level. The standard deduction for couples would now stand at 167 percent of the standard deduction for singles, rather than at 200 percent.

The dependent care and adoption tax credits would be cut, too - dependent care from $3,000 to $2,400 - while credits to purchase energy-efficient home appliances would end, along with tax credits to hire unemployed veterans and young people.

It doesn't stop there, and don't think death is a sure fire way to escape the tax man, either. Right now, there is no death tax, but next year that grim reaper would return with a 55-percent rate on estates exceeding $1 million in value.

Opponents of the death tax say it would fall especially hard on those who inherit small businesses, because often they have to sell the business to pay the tax.

The end of the Bush tax cuts also means higher tax rates on savings and investments. For example, the capital gains tax would rise from a maximum of 15 percent this year to a maximum of 20 percent. In addition, qualified dividends would journey from a 15-percent rate to the taxpayer's regular bracket rate, or, for many, an increase of 167 percent.

Then, too, the ability of small businesses to expense certain purchases up to $250,000 would be rolled back to purchases not exceeding $25,000. Larger businesses, who are now able to expense half of their purchases of equipment, could no longer do so but would have to depreciate such purchases.

Education? Reading, writing and arithmetic will all add up to higher taxes when you read the fine print and write your check. For instance, the deduction for tuition and fees will be gone, and education tax credits limited. Teachers will be unable to deduct classroom expenses, and hundreds of thousands of households will forego eligibility for the student loan interest deduction.

Charitable contributions from IRAs would no longer be permitted. Right now, a retiree with an IRA can contribute up to $100,000 a year to a charity from an IRA.

Not set in stone

None of this is a done deal.

The truth is, there are few people in the dominant Democratic Party who want to see all the tax cuts go away, despite Internet hyperbole to the contrary.

While many Republicans want to extend all the cuts, President Barack Obama has urged lawmakers to keep the tax cuts for lower brackets - keeping the 10, 15 and 25 percent brackets - and to reconfigure the 28-percent bracket to comprise married couples with household incomes of less than $250,000 and single taxpayers with incomes of less than $200,000.

Rates on income higher than that would rise to 36 percent and 39.6 percent from their levels of 33 percent and 35 percent.

There is no predicting whether Congress will side with the president or chart a compromise course, but talk of compromise is getting louder as mid-term elections approach.

Supporters of the tax cuts also got an unexpected boost two weeks ago from the Congressional Budget Office, which issued a report saying extending the cuts would boost the gross domestic product and reduce unemployment.

"In addition, under current law, both the waning of fiscal stimulus and the scheduled increases in taxes will temporarily subtract from growth, especially in 2011," the CBO report stated. " . . . .If, for example, (the tax reductions enacted earlier in the decade were continued, the alternative minimum tax was indexed for inflation, and future annual appropriations remained the share of GDP that they are this year), growth of real GDP in 2011 would be 0.6 to 1.7 percentage points higher than it is in the baseline forecast, and the unemployment rate at the end of 2011 would be 0.3 to 0.8 percentage points lower."

Stay tuned. The stage is set for a September Senate debate over the expiration of the tax cuts.

Other taxes

No matter the outcome on the Bush tax cuts, as the CBO report observed, the Obama administration and Congress must also decide whether to pass legislation to index the aforementioned alternative minimum tax for inflation, which legislators regularly do.

If they do not, millions more are going to be paying the tax, which was enacted in 1969. The levy was intended to give taxable income a broader range with fewer allowable deductions and was meant to affect only higher income taxpayers.

Under the system, taxpayers must figure their taxes the normal way as well as by using the AMT formula and then pay the higher tax. By not indexing the tax to inflation, however, it has caught up to many more Americans as incomes have risen through the years.

In 1970, 155 Americans paid the AMT, Fox News has reported, while CBO numbers indicate it hit 4.5 million citizens in 2009.

For that year Congress excluded most couples earning a combined $70,950 and less and individuals making $46,700 or less from the AMT.

Without a change in the law, it's going to be a lot more, CBO director Douglas Elmendorf said on the CBO website.

"About 4.5 million taxpayers were affected by the AMT in 2009," Elmendorf wrote. "That number has been kept relatively small by annual modifications to the AMT rules, but the most recent modifications expired at the end of calendar year 2009. Consequently, about 27 million taxpayers - one out of every six taxpayers - will be affected by the AMT in 2010, paying on average an additional $3,900 in tax."

Nearly every married taxpayer with income between $100,000 and $500,000 will owe some alternative tax, he stated, and the total cost will come to $102.2 billion from those 27 million taxpayers.

"Of those taxpayers, nearly two thirds will make between $50,000 and $100,000 this year," Elmendorf wrote.

Health care.

The Obama administration and Congress injected the new health care law with a syringe full of taxes, too - more than 20 in fact.

There is a tanning tax, already in effect, subject to a 10-percent excise tax when tanning at a salon.
In addition, citizens will no longer be able to use a health savings account, a flexible spending account, or health reimbursement pre-tax dollars to purchase nonprescription, over-the-counter medicines.
And if you take money out of a health savings account early for a nonmedical reason, the additional tax is slated to rise from 10 percent to 20 percent.

Add to that a multi-billion dollar tax on name-brand drugs and many taxpayers might likely soon feel the pain of the new health care law.

Also built into the health care law was a 3.8 percent tax, starting in 2013, on the unearned income of individuals who earn more than $200,000 - for married couples filing jointly, $250,000 - including interest, dividends, annuities, royalties and rents.

The tax will be allocated to the Medicare Trust Fund.
All totaled, according to the CBO, reviewing all of the provisions related to health care and revenues, the legislation is estimated to increase mandatory outlays by $401 billion and raise revenues by $525 billion.

Hugh Hewitt interviewed House minority leader John Boehner a few days ago, and could not get Boehner to commit to a rapid legislative agenda to repeal and reverse the Democrat’s leftist legislative cramdown after the midterms in November. Boehner hemmed and hawed, sounding every bit like the establishment inside-the-beltway career politicians that got us into the dire economic mess that we’re in now.

To make matters worse, Bill Kristol related to Hewitt on yesterday’s podcast that he asked a “high-ranking GOP leader” what their plans were, what they intended to do should the GOP take control of one or both Houses of Congress, and this unnamed source said that they were trying to get members to sign off on a “No Earmarks” pledge, but said it was very tough going. Kristol was incredulous.

In this election year, with this blatantly obvious tidal wave of resentment and outright anger rushing toward establishment politicians (and quasi-socialist redistributionist Democrats), there are not enough Republican lawmakers with the backbone and moral courage to sign a pledge banning pork barrel spending?

The Beltway elite professional political class is neither Democrat nor Republican. They are, as coined by Mark Levin, STATISTS first and foremost. What’s good for the state is ultimately good for them, the elite professional political ruling class.

Watch for it. Obamacare should be repealed, completely, every single provision, rule, and regulation GONE, stricken from the public record and expunged from public consciousness.
But it won’t happen. Why? Because state control of health care is the ultimate power grab. Boehner and those who comprise the ruling class elite realize that as long as Obamacare exists, they will have a windmill to tilt against, a cause to rally the troops around, an issue to rail against.

Think about it. Imagine the seductive appeal of that kind of power over the lives of others.

Think your congressman can resist the urge to use his new authority as one of 435 quasi-health care administrators to ensure his re-election? Doubtful, right?

Stealth statist Republicans will nip at the edges of Obamacare, but will never repeal it because they have as much to lose (and, ironically, as much to gain) as the radical leftist Democrats who crammed it down our throats.

Obamacare is here to stay.

My name is James Maillette and I am running for the office of Vilas County Sheriff. I am asking for your vote in the upcoming Republican primary on September 14th. I am a constitutional conservative, a strong leader, and a vocal advocate for fiscal responsibility at all levels of government. I am running because I believe outside of the box thinking and a business like management philosophy will be required to effectively run the Sheriff's Department in the coming years. Whether it is impending budget shortfalls, or evolving criminal practices, I believe we can no longer afford to maintain a reactionary posture when addressing upcoming problems.

What is the job of the Sheriff?

Like Sheriff Joe, I believe that understanding and protecting the Constitution is the most important duty of the county sheriff. I have been endorsed by the Republican Liberty Caucus specifically because I understand the Constitution better than anyone else in this race. As your Sheriff, my priority will be to ensure that in Vilas County the Constitution of the United States is upheld as the supreme law of the land, and that your rights are protected from anyone who would seek to infringe upon them.

As the holder of the highest degree attainable in the intelligence field (Masters of Strategic Intelligence - with honors); I am the only candidate capable of preparing our officers for the law enforcement demands of the uncertain future we are facing, as I am the only one who has taken the initiative and advanced my understanding of today’s complex security environment. For over seven years, I dedicated my time and money to the study of areas such as Terrorism & Counterterrorism, Homeland Security, Industrial Espionage, Criminal Law, Threat Analysis, Tactical Intelligence, and Counternarcotics Operations, so that I would have the knowledge base needed to make good decisions on your behalf.

Protect You From Intrusive Government: You need to look no further than my opponent to find the threat of increasing government intrusion, as he has expressed the desire to issue more citations in order to increase department revenue! Despite a 9.8% increase in union salary costs over the last two years, or the $17,000+ per year health insurance coverage he receives, my opponent maintains that it should be you the taxpayer who foots the bill for the department’s irresponsible spending habits. Despite his 33 years of police experience and his 18 years as a union representative, my opponent still fails to differentiate between what is, and is not, the proper role of government in our lives. I believe that in a free country, law enforcement should only be used to ensure the peace, and should always attempt to have as minimal an impact on society as possible. Law enforcement should never be used as a tool to collect revenue for the purpose of offsetting budget shortfalls! If elected, I will work to protect you from unreasonable revenue collection efforts such as that which my opponent is proposing, I will fight on your behalf when my opponent and his union negotiate their new contract next year, and I will stand up for your rights when outside government agencies come here to Vilas County.

To Run Your Department Like a Business: My opponent has continually said throughout this campaign that “You can’t run the Sheriff’s Department like a business, because a business can fail, and the Sheriff’s Department can never fail.” I adamantly disagree. Just like businesses, governments can and do fail; and if we don’t make major changes in the way we do things at all levels, ours will fail as well. Budget cuts are coming whether we like it or not, and I believe we must be proactive in planning for them. I plan on adopting a lean business model at the sheriff’s department, and promise to cut costs at the administrative level before terminating the positions of the people we need the most- our deputies and detectives.

Contrast this with my opponent, who despite all the evidence to the contrary, has continually refused to even acknowledge that the economic situation we are facing will have any effect on us here in Vilas County. He has steadfastly taken a hard line approach, saying time and again that the “department is run as bare bone and as efficient as possible.” And in typical union fashion, my opponent has promised that if faced with budget constraints, he will first move to eliminate the positions we value most as a community, such as our prescription drug detective. In short, he is using fear as a tool against you, attempting to scare you into thinking you will be “unsafe” if you don’t give him the funding he is demanding. It is an old and effective tactic, but one that I believe has been used one too many times. What my opponent fails to even recognize or acknowledge, what we in the free market have known for some time now, is that there is no more money to give!

Having owned and operated two businesses here in the Northwoods over the last nine years, and having served in a consulting capacity with a number of others, I know what it is like to run on a tight budget. I will value every dollar allocated to the Sheriff’s Department as if it were my own, and will establish a culture of fiscal frugality. In the business world, we know how to distinguish between luxuries and necessities, and I believe it is time for those who know only government to learn the difference between the two as well.

In Closing, I am running for this office because I truly believe we are living through historic, atypical times. More than anything else, your next Sheriff will have to be proactive and creative; he must be able to think outside the box, as the problems of tomorrow will be much more complex than those encountered in recent years. I believe that the combination of my military experience, educational background, and time spent in the business world make me the candidate best suited to deal with the uncertain times ahead. Because of this, I am asking for your support and for your vote in the upcoming republican primary on Sept. 14th.

Feingold also said his expected Republican opponent in November, Ron Johnson, is part of a group of conservative Republicans nationally whose goal is to “destroy” President Obama. On another campaign issue, Feingold said Johnson’s credibility was badly damaged when he said businesses – and not governments – create jobs, since Johnson’s Oshkosh business got help from a local government in the 1980s. Johnson may not have personally lobbied for the government help, but signed the application for it, Feingold added.

Brett Davis is a current state legislator, Rebecca Kleefisch is a former television anchorwoman and plans to use the position to market Wisconsin and recruit businesses to locate and grow here. Robert Lorge is a businessman who entered the race in June and has been a candidate in various races for the GOP in past elections. Dave Ross is a businessman who now serves as Superior's mayor. Ross plans to invoke fiscal responsibility into the position while supporting the newly elected Governor's agenda.

Long live the Constitutionalist Sheriff!

One of the tragedies of the current misled, uninformed, and otherwise preoccupied American citizenry is the seeming apathy regarding the importance and necessity of electing constitutionalist sheriffs. In many ways, State governors and county sheriffs just might be the most important elected offices in America. It is no hyperbole to say that State governors and county sheriffs form the last line of defense against tyranny and oppression. If our governors and sheriffs do not understand the principles of freedom and federalism, there is virtually zero protection against the abuses of liberty--save the right of the people to personally and individually defend liberty via the principles of God-given Natural Law.

Hence, a freedom-minded sheriff is invaluable to liberty's defense. And perhaps at no time in America's history has it been more necessary that we elect freedom-loving sheriffs than it is today, what with the ever-growing propensity of the federal government to trample and usurp State and constitutional protections of freedom.

For example, in an almost totally non-reported incident, an armed conflict between federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) agents and a Nevada Sheriff's SWAT team was averted only by virtue of the fact that, at the last minute, BLM backed down from the impending confrontation.

For the record: federal police agencies have a long history of committing illegal searches and seizures (even assault and murder--can anyone say, "Ruby Ridge" or "Waco"?) against the US citizenry. But BLM might be the most notorious federal police agency of all. The tactics BLM employs against western landowners sometimes border on Nazi-like. When the late, great Helen Chenoweth was an Idaho congresswoman, she tried to raise awareness of (and opposition to) this out-of-control federal agency. I urge readers to read Rep. According to Rep. Chenoweth, "BLM is taking onto themselves law enforcement that is normally saved for the State, law enforcement over motor vehicles.

They've written into the regulation without authority from Congress, the ability to stop vehicles or to search people, to search a place or a vehicle without warrant or process; to be able to seize without warrant or process any piece of evidence and to test people for potential DUI (driving under the influence)."

Chenoweth continued: "Our founders, when establishing our system of government wanted to make sure that law enforcement was closest to the people. You and I have talked before about how important it is to make sure that you elect the very best local county sheriff because he should be regarded as the highest law enforcement officer in the area because he is accountable to the voters. They really worried about a national, a federal, law enforcement. To federalize our law enforcement is to create a situation that the pilgrims were trying to escape.

"We are moving quickly to that. The Bureau of Land Management is taking onto themselves law enforcement authority that Congress never gave them. In the Federal Land Policy and Management Act that was passed in the early 1970s it made it clear that Congress said that, first, you must go to your local county sheriff for law enforcement activities."

Chenoweth added, "In the BLM proposed rules and regulations, you can't remove any plants or soil or pick up any rocks or minerals. You can't drive on any vegetation or soil. You can't disturb soil at all. Now you can't set a foot on soil without disturbing it. You can't set a foot on a ground plant without disturbing it."

For the sheriff in Nye County, Nevada, BLM abridgments of liberty had gone too far. When BLM threatened to arrest the sheriff if he refused to go along with BLM's illegal searches and seizures against Nye County citizens, Sheriff Tony DeMeo countered by telling BLM in no uncertain terms that should any agent attempt to enforce BLM's unconstitutional policies, he would have his deputies arrest them. DeMeo even had his SWAT teams standing by to enforce the law AGAINST THE OUT-OF-CONTROL FEDERAL AGENCY. To put it in Sheriff DeMeo's words, "We'd be standing between them [BLM] and my constituents [county residents]." At the last minute, BLM backed off and the confrontation between the Nye County sheriff's office and the federal agency was averted.

Now, Sheriff Tony DeMeo is exactly the kind of sheriff the Constitution requires! Unfortunately, it seems that the vast majority of sheriffs across the country have no idea as to what their constitutional authority entails, and seem to have no discernment and understanding of just what the federal government is doing to usurp State and local jurisdiction. Or if they do, they seem to lack the courage to act upon their power and authority. Or maybe they simply lust after federal monies (better known as bribes).

Of course, there are a few sheriffs across America who seem to be aware of what's going on and have the guts to do something about it. A precious few.

Along with Sheriff Tony DeMeo, there is Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Maricopa County, Arizona, Sheriff Shane Harrington of Wibaux County, Montana, Sheriff Paul Babeu of Pinal County, Arizona, and, of course, there are former Sheriffs Ray Nash of Dorchester County, South Carolina, Richard Mack of Graham County, Arizona, and Jay Printz of Ravalli County, Montana. Plus, if the good people of Larimer County, Colorado, will elect Carl Bruning as their sheriff, there will be another principled constitutionalist sheriff to add to the list of patriot sheriffs. If liberty has any chance of surviving in the United States, it will be because the American people wake up to the importance and necessity of electing constitutionalist governors and sheriffs. Sheriffs, especially, are critical to the maintenance of liberty. It is a truism that, next to the people themselves, the sheriff's office helps form the last line of defense against federal abuse of power. Long live the constitutionalist Sheriff!

DID YOUR DEAD UNCLE VOTE IN 2008?

In the 2008 election, Barb Struck of Ozaukee County discovered that her deceased mother’s name was still on the polling list. In an attempt to have her mother’s name removed she discovered her mother voted in a previous election after she had passes away! What a surprise, her mother was always determined but this was beyond the pale! So Barb went about getting the name taken off the list and after communicating with the Government Accountability Board, the name was finally removed.

Now it’s your turn, do you know someone who may still be listed on the state voter registration list and shouldn’t be? There is an easy way to find out; this is how you do it:

There is a very valuable tool on the internet called “VPA” – Voter Public Access (https://vpa.wi.gov ). By entering a name and birthdate you can check the voting status of your mother, father, children, aunts, uncles, all of your family and friends, living, deceased, or those who have moved to another area. Who knows, you may discover that someone who died or moved out of state is still voting! If so, call your municipal clerk (Google: “wis municipal clerks” for name and contact information) and have the incorrect name removed from the list. If the “name” is in another municipality call the Government Accountability Board at 608-266-8005.

While you’re at it, why don’t you call your municipal clerk or GAB and ask them for all the names registered at your address? If there are incorrect names, ask them to have them removed.

IMPORTANT: In both of the above scenarios, if you have found an incorrect registration, you can ask if that “name” voted in any of the last elections. Or you can enter the name and birthdate into https://vpa.wi.gov , click on the name, scroll down to “View Your Voting History” and determine if this “name” voted in past elections.

If there was a vote, A FELONY has been committed. We encourage you to file a criminal complaint at your local district attorney’s office. Make sure your D.A. copies you, as well as Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen.

Right now, there are 70,000 names on the statewide voter registration list that have failed the required identification checks, but the Government Accountability Board is hesitant to take these names off because they might “disenfranchise” someone. Never mind the fact that these people could simply reregister if their names were removed in error. Names that no longer should be on the list are still “active” and can be used by those who do not play by the rules.

Citizens, this is a “call to arms.” Barb has done her part, now it’s your turn!

The event will be held at Butch and Kim Simac's farm and is being co-hosted by many Vilas and Oneida County citizens who are grateful to JB for his hard work and dedication.

"At a time when so many elected officials are proving to be a disappointent to voters, JB Van Hollen is like a breath of fresh air" says Kim Simac, one of the hosts for the event. "JB has been making tough decisions and standing firm on so many issues coming to the table resulting in an overwhelming amount of respect and support for him across the state."

Ron Johnson is NOT Dave Westlake

The media has reported that there are not many differences between Wisconsin US Senate candidates Dave Westlake and Ron Johnson…however there is a CLEAR distinction between the two that is becoming more and more evident as the race goes on. In the upcoming general election against Feingold it is absolutely vital that whoever wins the primary is the right person to replace him - and the right person should be a strong conservative who can provide leadership in Washington. In the past two months that Ron Johnson has been in the race I have developed many concerns about his ability to lead for the people and maintain the level of consistent conservatism that our country so desperately needs.

Wisconsin Right to Life recently endorsed Ron Johnson, citing that he is the candidate who can best defeat Feingold, rather than stating that he is the candidate that best matches their organizations views - because he clearly doesn’t. Johnson allows exceptions (rape, incest, life of the mother in danger) while Westlake has advocated that he is 100% pro-life with no exceptions. Allowing exceptions calls into question the reason why we don’t allow abortions in the first place. Westlake’s views on abortion are much more on par with conservative values.

Another key issue that Westlake and Johnson don’t have the same perspective on is the 2nd Amendment.

When asked about the 2nd Amendment Johnson’s answers have continued to be disturbingly out of touch with what the founding fathers meant when they wrote the Bill of Rights. Johnson, who has made it clear that he “has never hunted” and is not a gun owner, said he had not given the issue “a lot of thought.” He has also said that while he supports the 2nd Amendment, he also supports licensing. Johnson stated, “Like we license cars and stuff, I don’t have a problem with minimal licensing and stuff.” This is dangerous territory - licensing does not impact crime rates and makes it significantly easier for the government to collect firearms should they ever wish to disarm the American public. The 2nd Amendment was included to allow for citizens to keep their government in check - and that is something that Johnson doesn’t appear to understand. Not to mention I would really like to hear what the “and stuff” is referring to. Westlake has repeatedly said that the right to bear arms is about liberty (not hunting), his website states, “if the government disarms the public through unconstitutional regulations, it does more than just leave innocent, law-abiding citizens exposed to criminals–it takes the first dangerous step towards justifying infringement upon any number of our other rights.” Westlake also does not support the ban on assault rifles. When Johnson was asked if he supported the assault rifle ban he said he had no position, as he was not a gun owner. Johnson’s lack of comprehension of the 2nd Amendment is discouraging and uncharacteristic of a strong conservative.

The Constitution is by far the most important document - not just to any elected official - but to ALL Americans. It is our responsibility to know our rights and we should expect our government to understand and value the constitution. Johnson said, “I will say, prior to doing this, I sat down and read the Constitution thoroughly, probably five, six times. It is not an easy document to read. Unless you study it in detail, it’s hard to study. “ Johnson was unable to name the Federal agencies he would consider unconstitutional - perhaps because he doesn’t really understand the Constitution - and that is frightening when you consider the fact that he is asking us to send him to Washington, to give him the responsibility of upholding the Constitution. Once again, Westlake is shown to be the true conservative in this race - as not only does he consistently push for constitutionally-based leadership but refers to the constitution as a “straightforward document.” He can easily name the institutions he considers unconstitutional, (Department of Energy, Department of Education, most of the EPA to name a few).

The Patriot Act is another issue that Westlake and Johnson disagree on. Johnson believes that the Patriot Act is a necessary tool that is being used to keep America safe from terrorism. Westlake believes that while the Patriot Act was necessary after 9/11, it has failed to keep us safe and is a threat to civil liberties.

There is nothing more infuriating to conservatives than illegal immigration. Westlake has stated that immigration reform has failed because of a lack of leadership in Washington - that we need to start taking it seriously and document and deport those who are here illegally. In regards to illegal immigration, it can be assumed that Johnson and Westlake share similar views with one major exception - Johnson has stated that he backs REAL ID, which infringes on the rights of Americans and imposes unnecessary financial burden, without improving national security.

Recently Feingold and Johnson have been trading insults back and forth about Great Lakes drilling. While it appears that Johnson supported drilling in the Great Lakes originally, his campaign released a statement saying he has never been for it. If Johnson is in fact, against Great Lakes drilling, it is alarming that he was unable to clearly address the issue from the start. This has obviously given Feingold a major opportunity to discredit him, and has made Johnson look like he is inconsistent.

Above all - the biggest difference between these candidates is the way they run their campaigns. Johnson appeared on the scene a week before the convention and received the party’s endorsement. He was thrust into the political limelight without having “given thought” to many important issues. His focus is on the party elite - the private meet and greets, the meetings at The Madison Club, the GOP sponsored events…he is ignoring the every day Wisconsinites that don’t have $2400 to donate to his campaign. He prefers to run television ads instead of shaking hands. When asked why he is running for Senate his answer straight out of the gate was - “I was watching FOX News and, uh, Dick Morris came on. He was talking about, uh, hey Russ Feingold is really, really vulnerable. Hey, if you’re a rich guy in the state of Wisconsin maybe you ought to decide to run.” Of course his consultants have altered that quite a bit since he first entered the race.

Johnson is also known for rudely walking away from people who he feels won’t vote for him - even republicans! With over 50% of voters undecided, it is impossible that Johnson will get enough votes to defeat Feingold if he doesn’t start spending time with Independents and Democrats - and even Republicans - who will challenge him with tough questions. A Senator is supposed to represent the people - not the party.
Which brings me to Dave Westlake. Westlake is clearly the underdog in this race- but not because he lacks passion, or principles or a clear understanding of the issues and how to fix them. In fact, Westlake is extremely qualified as a West Point graduate and army veteran with an impressive MBA from the University of Chicago. The reason Westlake is considered an underdog is because he is not a millionaire and he is not raising and spending millions on getting his message out there - instead he is relying mostly on face-to-face interaction with ALL voters. At a time when our country is facing such economic hardship, it is revolting and irresponsible for candidates to be dumping money into political campaigns. Westlake runs his campaign like I believe he would run Washington - without excess and unnecessary spending. He also has the ability to get an overwhelming amount of support from Democrats and Independents - because he takes the time to speak to everyone, regardless of what political party they identify with. The independent vote is absolutely vital to defeating Feingold - and Westlake can get it. He is genuinely running because he wants to serve his country - and the people, ALL the people, of Wisconsin, not just the Republicans.

Money will NOT defeat Feingold. He has a clear advantage against Johnson because he is able to run as the “every man’s” candidate because he is not “wealthy.” Johnson lacks substance and knowledge - the only things he has going for him is a negative ad campaign and money. Westlake is a true conservative who actually GETS it. Now is the time to change the way we run our campaigns - now is the time to change Washington - and it all starts with ONE candidate - ONE candidate who is brave enough to stand up to the establishment and refuse to back down. We cannot expect things to change when we elect the same type of people year after year… millionaires and career politicians are not the people I want representing me anymore. It is time that we stop complaining about not being able to trust politicians in Washington and start taking ACTION - and elect people based on what they stand for - not whether they have millions to spend on a campaign. If we don’t change the way we campaign and change the way we vote - we will NEVER fix this country.

Grand Opening of Our Conservative HQ was held July 19

Area conservative groups, including the local Tea Party group known as the Northwoods Patriots and Republican organizations including the Vilas County Republicans and Republican Women of the North, held the grand opening of their new headquarters at 155 S Railroad Street in Eagle River. All members and voters were invited to an Open House to celebrate the opening of the new headquarters on Monday, July 19.

Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Candidate Dave Ross, the current Mayor of Superior, spoke to the group, sharing his values, accomplishments and conservative vision for our state. As Lt Governor he intends to support the efforts of the new Governor and be an advocate for small business as the state works to rebuild its employment base and foster economic growth.

Dan Meyer also spoke to our group, sharing his frustration as member of the minority in the Assembly working to keep the spending and legislating in check and his optimism for the sessions ahead where conservatives need to be effective leaders.

Various campaign literature and yard signs were distributed as the groups work to promote conservative candidates in the upcoming primary September 14 and general election November 2. Candidates who are members of the Northwoods Patriots or Republican Party are invited to provide their literature for display (see Vilas GOP memo to members regarding our rationale for supporting candidates). A message to members of the Vilas County Republican Party:
(Delivered at the Grand Opening of the Conservative HQ July 19)

As the elected leaders of the Vilas County Republican Party, we would like to take this opportunity to clarify for the public our rationale for how we decide to treat prospective candidates running under the republican brand. Because Vilas County has historically trended towards the Republican side of the ticket, it is a common practice for local candidates to declare as Republicans simply because it is in their political best interest to do so, and not necessarily because they adhere to Republican ideals such as smaller government, free markets, or lower taxation. For many years, local candidates unknown to us have come forward just months before an election, proclaiming their credentials as Republicans and asking for our support, only to disappear once the election is over and remain unseen until the next election cycle comes around. And although we as the party leadership ultimately have no say in who decides to run under the Republican name sake, we will, to the best of our ability, give support to those candidates who have established Republican credentials and who we believe best represent the ideals of the Republican Party. How does one establish such credentials? First and foremost, a person should be a dues paying member in good standing with the Vilas County Republicans and or, the Wisconsin GOP or National GOP. Second, and perhaps most important, a person needs to show up to our meetings and to our events long before they decide to run for office. From the organization and planning that goes into the Lincoln Day Dinner or The Great Debate, to the preparations for the 4th of July parades, many hard working volunteers work selflessly year in and year out to ensure the Republican Party is well represented here in Vilas County. If a person joins us in such efforts, and establishes that their views are in line with ours, we will do the best that we can to support them when they decide to run for office. But understand that we believe the greatest mistake the Republican Party has made in recent years is the practice of supporting candidates simply because they claim to be Republicans. We believe that in order to truly reform our country for the better, we must first ensure that the candidates being put forth by the party are true conservatives, and not those simply using the party name to attain public office. Lacking other means, one of the best ways of accomplishing this is to support those people who have come to the Republican Party asking how they can help us, and not those who come to us looking to help them.

Madison — Gov. Jim Doyle denied a request Tuesday by Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen to file a friend-of-the-court brief in the U.S. Department of Justice's lawsuit against Arizona over its new immigration law.

Van Hollen, a Republican, wanted to join Michigan in the filing to make the case that states have the power to instruct their police officers to contact federal immigration official to verify a person's citizenship if they have reasonable suspicion the person is in the country illegally.

Van Hollen can't join the brief without the approval of the Democratic governor or one of the houses of the Legislature, which are both controlled by Democrats. Doyle declined the request Tuesday and lawmakers are not in session.

Doyle spokesman Adam Collins said the governor viewed the filing a "political stunt" because Wisconsin does not have a law like Arizona's.

Say NO to Disclose Act

Delving into the Democrats' DISCLOSE ACT
-- from the National Federation for Republican Women

The United States House of Representatives recently passed the Democrats' DISCLOSE Act ("Democracy is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections") in a vote of 219-206. Only two Republicans voted for the bill; Rep. Joseph Cao (R-LA) and Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE). 36 Democrats voted against the bill.

The bill was authored by Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) who chairs the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in an attempt to "right the wrongs" that Democrats claim the recent Supreme Court Citizens United decision opened.

The bill stifles free speech under the first amendment by
requiring small businesses, corporations, and non-profit organizations to electronically file burdensome financial disclosure forms (which don't even exist yet) within 24 hours of independent expenditures; a $10,000 penalty is the result of failure to comply.

527s, unions, and non-profits will be required to disclose the identities of individuals contributing over $600. Union dues are well under $600, so they will be exempt from this requirement.

In a deal to insure passage of the bill, Rep. Van Hollen provided an exemption for the NRA from the disclosure requirements. He also expanded the exemption to cover other large special interest groups, like the Sierra Club, who would have had serious objections to the bill.

The bill is now in the Senate. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is sponsoring the Senate bill (S. 3295) which is expected to be taken up before the August 9th recess. If passed in its current form, the law will take effect in 3o days, which will make it applicable to this November's elections. The Federal Election Commission will not have a chance to draw up clear guidelines in regards to the legislation.

This act is little more than a cheap political move by Democrats to control who can speak out on issues.

Republican Women's Meeting June 10 - Maillette for Sheriff Endorsed

Republican Women of the North held a membership meeting over lunch Thursday, June 10 at the Eagle River Inn.

Our President Kim Simac gave a summary of the Wisconsin Republican Convention 2010 that was held May 21-23 in Milwaukee, including the surprising endorsement of Ron Johnson for US Senate. Johnson had just announced his candidacy the beginning of that week and had just begun to campaign. Scott Walker was endorsed for WI Governor, and David King for Secretary of State. Lt Governor and our 8th Congressional District Representative races did not select candidates for endorsement. Nomination papers were presented and signatures gathered for various Republican candidates in the numerous primary races. We also discussed manning a table/booth at area flea markets and other locations during the rest of this month to gather more nomination signatures and simultaneously promote our club, the GOP and our Republican candidates. If any members have an interest in helping with this, please email right away and we'll finalize these plans.

We also discussed plans to promote our club, the GOP and our Republican candidates during Independence Day activities around the area. We plan to march in at least two parades with a float and we'll be handing out American flags from the Vilas County GOP: St Germain Parade will be at 1pm Sunday June 27 and the Eagle River Parade will be at 11am on Sunday July 4. If you are interested in partpciating in either or both parades, please contact Mary Lou Hake at 715-479-8224. We'll start gathering about 1 hour prior to the start of each parade.

Next on our agenda was a presentation by James Maillette who is a Republican candidate running for Vilas County Sheriff. Maillette comes with a strong background in Homeland Security, Intelligence and Counterterrorism. He is a libertarian-leaning Republican who recognizes that our US Constitution limits governmental power and he acknowledges the importance of protecting individual rights at the local level. Maillette explained that by not being a current employee at the Sheriff's Department, he has an outsider's perspective and is able and willing to consider alternatives to operate more efficiently and save money in the process. He plans to bring business-minded/free-market principles to the table. He talked about leading a more open department with staff members and the sheriff himself out visiting members of the community routinely.

Maillette has been involved in joint functions we have had with the Vilas GOP. He assisted as a moderator at our Great Debate held in May, which served to vet the candidates with probing questions and valued follow-up. After some discussion about his campaign and positions, we decided to take a vote in favor of endorsing James Maillette for Vilas County Sheriff. He brings extensive knowledge and willingness to serve and we look forward to supporting him in the primary and general elections this fall! Thank you to all who volunteered with assistance to plan and execute the Great Debate of the North held Saturday in St. Germain, Vilas County, Wisconsin. It was quite a productive day with various speakers and three major GOP Debates, held as a first-of-its-kind event in the Northwoods.

GREAT DEBATE OF THE NORTH TO BE HELD IN ST. GERMAIN
Republican Candidates to Debate May 8

ST GERMAIN Wis - Republican candidates in three key primary races will hold a first-of-its-kind debate in the Northwoods on Saturday May 8 at the St. Germain Community Center on Hwy 155, beginning at 10:00 am. The debate, sponsored by the Republican Women of the North, is free and open to the public.

The Great Debate of the North will provide an opportunity for residents of Northern Wisconsin to hear directly from these candidates about their positions on a variety of challenges facing our state and nation. Republican candidates seeking their party’s nomination in races for the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, and Lieutenant Governor will debate the issues and discuss their political philosophies.

The Republican Women of the North will welcome attendees and candidates at 10:00 am. They will then award a scholarship to the winning student who best described “What Being a Woman in America Means” in an essay contest recently held.

At 10:15 am, Dave Westlake, candidate for the U.S. Senate, will be introduced. His Republican challenger, Terrence Wall, is unable to attend. Westlake will participate and face questions from the moderators.

Beginning at 11:00 am, candidates for Lieutenant Governor will face off. These candidates will include Ben Collins, Brett Davis, Rebecca Kleefisch and Dave Ross.

Food and refreshments will be available at noon, during which time Secretary of State candidate David King and Vilas County Sheriff candidate James Maillette will address the audience.

At approximately 12:45 pm, all five Republican candidates in Wisconsin’s 8th congressional district race for the U.S. House of Representatives will debate. Candidates in this race include Terri McCormick, Reid Ribble, Roger Roth, Marc Savard, and Marc Trager.

Republican Women of the North recognize the instrumental contributions of time and talents by the Northwoods Patriots, Jerry Burkett for his sound system, and to the Town of St. Germain for the Community Center venue.

WI Legislative Floor Period Concluded

Each two year legislative session is comprised of committee work periods during which bills are vetted in legislative committees, and floor periods during which bills may be debated and voted on in either the full Assembly or Senate.

April 22, 2010 marked the date of the last regular floor period. This means bills that have not passed both the Assembly & Senate by this date can no longer be signed into law. Many will be re-introduced when the next legislative session begins in January, 2011.

The final session days on Tuesday and Thursday of this week ended with two 19-hour marathon sessions that included the debate of 82 bills on Tuesday and 66 bills on Wednesday.

The fate of three of the most publicized bills scheduled for consideration this week, such as AB 649 (global warming), AB 895(elections overhaul), and AB 282 (regional transit authorities) is that although scheduled for a vote, they were not passed by the end of session.

To monitor the outcome of other legislation important to you, the "Searchable Infobase" on the Wisconsin State Legislature Homepage tracks legislative action taken on bills and will soon be updated to reflect recent actions taken.

Meyer Legislation Heads to Governor's Desk

Legislation written by Representative Dan Meyer recently passed both legislative houses and is on its way to the Governor's desk. The bill will improve informed consent laws for patients with dementia residing in nursing homes.

The bill is modeled on laws already on the books that require individuals with mental illness or developmental disabilities (or their legal guardians) to be presented with written informed consent before being administered antipsychotic medication.

The bill expands the current law requirement by requiring written informed consent in cases when an antipsychotic, for which the FDA has issued a "black box warning," is prescribed for a patient with dementia in a nursing home.

The purpose of this bill is to make sure patients with dementia (or their legal guardians) have accurate and up-to-date information about antipsychotic medication that the FDA has determined may carry increased risks for these individuals.

A second, vital component to the bill specifies that informed consent forms include a description, using the most recently issued information from the FDA, of the side effects or risks of side effects of the medication and any warnings about the medication. The bill would require the Department of Health Services (DHS) to keep abreast of information that is issued from the FDA.

Requiring that a form be presented to a nursing home resident (or their guardian) under these circumstances will help them be properly informed about the medication and just as importantly, bring a measure of accountability for the information that appears on the form.

While the use of medication is a decision to be made between the patient and health care providers, it is imperative the patient or their legal guardians have accurate and up-to-date information to make informed decisions.

The bill that passed, Senate Bill 609, was co-authored by Senator Holperin and passed both the Assembly & Senate unanimously. It will next be advanced to the Governor for his consideration.

We had a terrific visit with Terri McCormick last Wednesday, April 14 in St. Germain, WI. For introduction, she talked about her background, family's heritage, how her family influenced her growing up and still impacts how she approaches challenges today. We then had a great discussion about her campaign and a number of issues currently facing our country and Wisconsin.

The need for independent thinkers, free-market problem solvers, and liberty-minded candidates has never been more evident. Terri represents the Libertarian-leaning Republican in Wisconsin's 8th District with a strong will to uphold our Constitution. Harsh Realities of Voter Protection Act - We must speak out now!

Well-written summary of the Voter Protection Act by Wisconsin Family Action:

With the 2009-10 Legislative Session ending next week, the State Legislature is attempting to push through a massive bill that would radically change Wisconsin’s current election law…and not for the better.

The Democratic Majority in the legislature is fast-tracking AB 895/SB 640, a bill that is meant to tip the scales in favor of, ultimately, more voter fraud, which would in turn, apparently, tip the scales in favor of the Democratic Majority in the legislature.

Here are a few of our issues with the 72-page proposed legislation:

Automatic voter registration. The bill creates automatic voter registration using the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) records for DOT operator’s licenses or identification cards. Wisconsin’s election division, the so-called Government Accountability Board (GAB), would automatically register to vote all eligible individuals using the DOT’s files. Those automatic registrations could then be confirmed online, of all things. So someone could be registered by the state government to vote and then confirmed by someone else online! And no signature is required for voter registration.

Permanent absentee voting. The bill allows individuals to register to permanently receive absentee ballots for every election. Municipalities must then mail the absentee ballots to those individuals every year until a ballot is not returned for one year (two years in the substitute amendment). In addition to opening the door for voter fraud, this provision is an unfunded mandate for municipalities.

No signature required. The bill would remove the requirement that absentee ballots be certified and witnessed, removing safeguards against absentee ballot fraud, and the ability to legally defend or challenge an absentee ballot.

Challenging electors. The bill requires that challenging electors, i.e. “poll watchers,” would have to be from the same ward as the voter he/she challenges. The substitute amendment loosens that requirement to the county level. Challenging electors could do nothing to challenge a fraudulent vote, under the bill, unless they could verify they were from the same ward! The challenger would be required to provide identification but the challenged voter would not!

Conspicuously missing: Voter ID. Nowhere in the bill.

Wisconsin's Attorney General, J.B. Van Hollen, made the following statement concerning AB 895/SB 640: “the changes proposed in this bill neither enhance the right to vote nor protect against fraud. Instead, they make election fraud more likely, chill the lawful exercise of speech that is at the core of the First Amendment, and jeopardize the orderly administration of election laws.” No kidding!

Your State Legislators need to hear from you on this dangerous bill! Both the Assembly and Senate version of the bill are ready to be scheduled for a floor vote in both houses next week. Time is of the essence.

Believe me, it is no coincidence that the Democrats are trying to fast-track this legislation at the last moment in order to implement it before the crucial fall elections. We need to hold them accountable for this attempt to disenfranchise voters!

Breaking News! A Wisconsin federal district judge just struck down the National Day of Prayer (NDP) statute! Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation brought the case against the statute, claiming the NDP violates the so-called "separation of church and state." President Obama would have to appeal the decision.

Northwoods Patriots and Concerned Citizens to Stage Protest - Senate Bill 640 and Assembly Bill 895 - Takeover of Wisconsin Elections - scheduled to be voted on this month in Madison

On Tuesday, April 13, 2010, numerous Northwoods Patriots and concerned citizens will gather in Eagle River to protest the proposed takeover of Wisconsin elections as set forth in Senate Bill 640, and Assembly Bill 895, that may be scheduled to be voted on this week in Madison. The group will meet from 2:45 pm to 3.45 pm in the parking lot behind the Century 21 - Burkett Real Estate office on the corner of Hwy 45 and Wall Street in Eagle River, located next to Walgreens and across from the Friendship House Restaurant.

“We are appalled and shocked that our own Senator Jim Holperin would be one of the authors of this bill.” stated Kim Simac, leader of the Northwoods Patriots. “This is outrageous and I think he has some real explaining to do. I emailed him on the subject last week and still have not received a reply. Aside from the fact that this bill is introducing legislation that will open the floodgates to voter fraud in the state of Wisconsin and add unfunded financial burdens to local municipalities, it is being ram-rodded through the state legislature with virtually little or no time for Wisconsin citizens to learn about it, let alone voice their opinion.”

This bill was introduced on March 23, 2010. On April 9th it was passed out of committee and scheduled for a vote by the full Senate prior to recess in Mid April. As of today's date this 72-page bill could be scheduled for a vote as early as this Thursday, April 15th.

The most alarming changes of the bill include:

The bill allows municipalities to set up satellite absentee ballot stations for early voting - including outside of bars.

In addition, permanent absentee ballot status would be established in which ballots would be sent to people who historically do not vote in low-turnout elections. This would mean not only putting an additional financial burden on municipalities, but even more importantly, create a system for voting where there are few if any checks to verify who actually returns the ballots. Currently, permanent absentee ballot status is restricted to people who are confined because of age, physical illness, infirmity, or disability.

The current open government practice of allowing any citizen to challenge individual ballots would end as monitoring of elections of statewide or national significance would be restricted to people who live within that polling district.

University ID's would be allowed as proof of residency. The problem is that these same students could be registered at their home addresses as well, allowing them to vote in both districts. Since it has become well known that ACORN, and like-minded special interest groups equally illicit, even pays college students to vote, this leaves the state wide open for voter fraud on campuses.

Another provision would automatically register everyone to vote when they renew their driver's licenses. While this sounds convenient, it is an unimpeded path to election fraud for there will be no way to ensure that anyone who knows a name and address doesn't just walk up to a voting booth and cast a vote. Plus, there is no system in place to manage the transfer of voter registrations like this when people move. This provision leaves us wide open and extremely vulnerable to voter fraud.

The bill proposes to set up a statewide database of voters that the authors said they would hope to link up to a national database. In fact, the liberal Democrats are using Wisconsin as the launch pad for this new voting scheme, planning to roll it out nationwide once it passes in Wisconsin.

“This is a shocking power grab of some extremist Democrats who are trying to change our laws so that more unqualified voters are able to vote and so that we are not able to determine whether or not voting fraud in fact took place.” stated Senator Glenn Grothman, 20th Senate District, who also has vowed to fight against Senate Bill 640 and Assembly Bill 895. “Ironically, the one voting change that most Wisconsin citizens request, a Voter ID, is about the only thing not included in this far-reaching bill that is being fast-tracked through the State Legislature” he added.

“This is an outrage” continued Kim Simac of the Northwoods Patriots. “And this is not a Democrat, a Republican, or a Conservative issue - it is an “American Voter” issue that will affect all of us. For if we don't have fair elections, we don't have anything.
