Islam on Capitol Hill 2009 - Islam stayed home

I wrote Islam takes the D.C. Mall on 9/9/2009. I linked Islam on Capitol Hill's website, which claimed 50,000 Muslims would descend on the mall and in ominous text at the bottom read "OUR TIME HAS COME."

Well their time came and went for this round. There were about 5,000 Muslims on the Mall, praying at the Capitol building and whatnot, so the organizers only missed by 90% or so. I previously wrote this "is going to go over like a lead balloon. It did, just not in the fashion I assumed it would. The event was so underwhelming, that the news barely covered it. Compared to the grand displays Muslims overseas held in front of Christian Holy sites all over Europe last year, this was like Harold & Kumar's birthday party.

The imagery of Islam on Capitol Hill was inspired by President Obama's campaign posters, which were inspired by old school agitprop.

Perhaps the next time the activist elements won't be so bold as to declare "OUR TIME HAS COME." Perhaps next time the slogan will be "Why can't we be friends?" or "Please show up in D.C. this time!"

Perhaps next time, they might want to choose some spokesmen who are a little more cuddly. Hearing Dr. Ahmad Dwidar, Imam of the Islamic Center in New York, say “We are going to the White House, so that Islam will be victorious, Allah willing, and the White House will turn into the Muslim house” is not very all-American, unifying or comforting. It's good thing for him the news was not interested, or this event could have become a circus for Islam on Capitol Hill.
Lucky for them our journalists, who should be asking questions, stay home as well.

Affirms Congressional Action
Supporting Democracy in Iran

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Congressman Mike Pence of Indiana and Senator John McCain of Arizona succeeded Friday in shepherding through resolutions supporting the Iranian citizens' quest for democracy in their country. In the House of Representatives, the vote was 405-1, and the Senate adopted two separate resolutions by voice vote.

The National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) agrees with Congress that America supports the Iranian people who are being brutally attacked for protesting the unfair elections that occurred recently. Violence has erupted in the streets of Tehran, as the hardline Iranian government has threatened bloodshed if the people continue to protest.

“It is imperative that the people of Iran know that Americans support their right to a democratically-elected government,” NFRW President Shirley Sadler said. “President Obama's statements regarding the election and the subsequent violence committed by the Iranian government against its people have been glaringly weak, and we applaud the efforts of Congress that show the United States supports these people in their efforts.”

Republican leaders in Congress spoke out yesterday about this issue. “The President of the United States is supposed to lead the free world, not follow it,” said Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC). Senator John McCain (R-AZ) compared Obama's statements to the leaders of France, Great Britain and Germany. “I think we ought to have America lead. When you look at the statements by President Sarkozy, Chancellor Merkel and Prime Minister Brown have been much stronger. We should lead. And I also think he should point out that this is not just an Iranian issue. This is an American issue—what we're all about,” McCain said on Sunday's “Face the Nation.”

Founded in 1938, the NFRW has thousands of active members in local clubs across the nation and in several U.S. territories, making it one of the largest women's political organizations in the country. The grassroots organization recruits and elects Republican candidates, advocates the Party's philosophy and initiatives, and empowers women in the political process.
