Supports Ryan's Response to State of Union

Welcomes Message of Limited Government, Spending Cuts, Debt Reduction

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Sue Lynch, president of the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW), issued the following statement in support of Congressman Paul Ryan's (R-WI) response to the State of the Union address:

"I applaud the strong Republican response delivered by Congressman Paul Ryan following the State of the Union address. Due to the harmful effects of President Obama’s stimulus spending spree and open-ended healthcare entitlements, Republicans owe Americans ‘a better choice and a different vision.’


"Congressman Ryan reaffirmed the Republican commitment to limited government and highlighted specific measures the new Republican majority has already implemented to begin to restrain federal spending and the spiraling deficit.


"It is time that the White House and Democrats in Congress shift their rhetoric to results. We hope Democrats will follow the example of the new Republican majority as we take action to cut spending, reduce the debt, help create jobs and prosperity, and reform government programs."

Legislative Update from Nat'l Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) - Week of Sept 28

"This is not a war of choice. This is a war of necessity. Those who attacked America on 9/11 are plotting to do so again. If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven from which Al Qaida would plot to kill more Americans. So this is not only a war worth fighting; this is fundamental to the defense of our people." -President Barack Obama (8/17/2009)

Afghanistan Strategy

In his own words, President Obama has labeled the war in Afghanistan as a "necessary war." He deployed an additional 21,000 troops in the spring to bolster US and NATO forces serving in Afghanistan. In May, President Obama appointed General Stanley McChrystal as Commander of the American and NATO forces in Afghanistan.

In August 2009, General McChrystal has issued his own assessment of the critical situation in Afghanistan in which he requested more troops and resources to help in his expanded counterinsurgency campaign in Afghanistan. Both General David Petraeus, head of U.S. Central Command, and Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have endorsed General McChrystal's assessment of the war in Afghanistan.

The President has remained silent about what he intends to do in the wake of the request for additional troops and resources. He has stated that his Administration is conducting a comprehensive assessment of the strategy in Afghanistan that he will take into consideration before he makes any decisions.

ACORN UPDATE

On September 17, the House passed HR 3571, the Defund ACORN Act in a 345-75 vote. This bill was introduced by House Minority Leader John Boehner and other Republicans and terminates federal funding of ACORN.

On the Hill

The Senate Finance Committee will continue mark-ups on the Baucus health care bill today. They will also be considering two public option amendments.

The Senate is debating the $636 billion Defense appropriations bill. This bill eliminates the $133 million the House had set aside to purchase 2 Gulfstream jets for the use of Members of Congress.

The Senate may also have to make a decision about increasing debt limits.

House and Senate Republicans are taking a closer look at ACORN's private sources of funding.

Paul Kirk was sworn in as the temporary replacement for Senator Edward Kennedy. He was a former aide and confidant of the late Senator.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is reviewing ways to bring down the cost of the House Health Care bill to $900 billion over the next decade.

House Republicans and some Democrats are partnering on a discharge petition which would force a vote on a bill requiring 72 hour review period before the House can vote on legislation.

House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) have agreed to meet to discuss areas of bipartisan agreement on health care reform.

NFRW Legislative Brief - Week of Sept 21

Health Care Legislation Round Two...

The Senate released the latest version of health care reform legislation last week. The response from the public shows that this bill does not come any closer to solving the same problems the House Democrats' bill attempted to address.

There are several parts of the new Baucus bill that will continue to cause division. President Obama has pushed for the individual mandate in the bill which forces Americans to purchase government-approved health insurance or pay a $3,800 tax per household. The Baucus bill also contains cuts in Medicare Advantage payment rates which will cut benefits significantly for the millions of American seniors who are enrolled in the private insurance option component of Medicare. There is a new tax on high cost insurance plans which would be passed on to workers and individual insurance enrollees.

One of the most shocking components buried in the most recent legislative attempt at health care reform is a tax on Class II medical devices including: contact lenses and solutions, hearing aides, thermometers, oxygen bottles, wheelchairs, home pregnancy tests, condoms, tampons, etc. You can search other medical items you use on a daily basis to determine whether they would fall under this tax on Class II medical devices on the FDA Website.

CAP AND TRADE UPDATE

The Obama Administration has FINALLY acknowledged the devastating impact the Cap and Trade legislation (narrowly passed in the House) would have on American families.

"The Obama administration has privately concluded that a cap and trade law would cost American taxpayers up to $200 billion a year, the equivalent of hiking personal income taxes by about 15 percent."

On the Hill

The debate over Afghanistan is heating up on the Hill in response to the US top commander's warning about the risk of "failure" without a troop surge.

Senate Finance Committee is beginning mark-ups on the $856 billion health care reform bill. There are 564 amendments on the table.

Senator Snowe (R-M) has not stated publicly whether or not she intends to vote for the Baucus health care bill.

The American Medical Association has expressed serious concerns over the Baucus bill.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is threatening to cancel the Senate's Columbus Day recess unless they clear some of the legislative items on their agenda before then.
Senator George LeMieux (R-FL) will serve on the Armed Services, Commerce, Science and Transportation, and Aging Committees.

GOP gets Justice Department investigation into ACORN funds.

GOP lawmakers are pushing for citizenship verification to be included in the House health care bill to prevent extending benefits to illegal immigrants.

With two weeks left in the fiscal year and no appropriation bills, House Democratic leadership is moving forward with a continuing resolution that would fund the federal government at current levels.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer is cutting 4 days from the House's work schedule.

For Obama, Liberal Agenda Comes at a Cost -----------

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll today reports President Obama's approval rating now at 45% with voters who say they somewhat approve of the President's performance.

In a New York Times op-ed, David Brooks writes, "All presidents fall from their honeymoon highs, but in the history of polling, no newly elected American president has fallen this far this fast."
Over the past few months, President Obama's approval ratings have steadily declined as he continues to push the implementation of his liberal agenda. His decisions, from the passage of the $787 billion dollar stimulus package to pushing for comprehensive government run health care reform proposals, show how out of touch the Obama Administration is with the American people.

President Obama seems to believe that his election provided him with a mandate that enabled him to push through his agenda at all costs due to his popularity. The past few months have shown the public's verdict on the presidential mandate that is clearly indicated in the latest polls.

Cap and Trade Update -----------

Cap and Trade legislation will not be presented in the Senate until late September.

Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chairman, Barbara Boxer
(D-CA), and Senate Foreign Relations Chairman, John Kerry, (D-MA), are working on the Kerry-Boxer bill which they plan to introduce in late September.

The delay was attributed to several reasons including the passing of Senator Edward Kennedy and the current health care debate.
On the Hill

Rep. Henry Waxman, (D-CA), Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations have requested more information form the top six insurance companies in their investigation into business practices of insurance companies.

Congressional Members of both parties are continuing to hold town hall meetings with constituents on health care.

MA Governor Deval Patrick announced that a special election will be held on January 19th to fill the Senate seat of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy.

Florida Governor Crist has appointed his former chief of staff, George LeMieux, to fill the Senate seat of Mel Martinez who is expected to step down by the end of the month.

House Committee Approves Health Care Overhaul Legislation

On Friday, July 31, 2009, the House Energy and Commerce Committee approved legislation for a health care overhaul. The legislation will be moving to the House for a vote this fall. Blue Dog Democrats struck a deal with Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, last week that paved the way for the House Democrat's proposal to move out of committee. Their deal included Rep. Waxman cutting out $100 billion, slightly weakening the public option concept, and exempting a few more small businesses from certain tax proposals. In reality, the deal did not change any of the core issues in the bill that have caused Americans to express outrage over the health care hoax in Congress. The concessions that were included in the deal may not even be included in final legislation that must first go through two other committees.

Let's keep the heat on during summer break!

As Congressional members return to their home states and districts over the recess, it is a great time to get in touch with your members to register your opposition to the current Democratic Health Care overhaul proposals in the House and Senate. On the Hill

On Tuesday, President Obama will host the entire Senate Democratic Conference at the White House for lunch. Over the August recess, House Minority Whip, Rep. Eric Cantor, (R-VA), will be urging members to stay on message with health care. The House has recessed for August. The Senate is still in session. The Senate should be taking up the Supreme Court nomination of Sonia Sotomayor today.

Affirms Congressional Action
Supporting Democracy in Iran

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Congressman Mike Pence of Indiana and Senator John McCain of Arizona succeeded Friday in shepherding through resolutions supporting the Iranian citizens' quest for democracy in their country. In the House of Representatives, the vote was 405-1, and the Senate adopted two separate resolutions by voice vote.

The National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) agrees with Congress that America supports the Iranian people who are being brutally attacked for protesting the unfair elections that occurred recently. Violence has erupted in the streets of Tehran, as the hardline Iranian government has threatened bloodshed if the people continue to protest.

“It is imperative that the people of Iran know that Americans support their right to a democratically-elected government,” NFRW President Shirley Sadler said. “President Obama's statements regarding the election and the subsequent violence committed by the Iranian government against its people have been glaringly weak, and we applaud the efforts of Congress that show the United States supports these people in their efforts.”

Republican leaders in Congress spoke out yesterday about this issue. “The President of the United States is supposed to lead the free world, not follow it,” said Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC). Senator John McCain (R-AZ) compared Obama's statements to the leaders of France, Great Britain and Germany. “I think we ought to have America lead. When you look at the statements by President Sarkozy, Chancellor Merkel and Prime Minister Brown have been much stronger. We should lead. And I also think he should point out that this is not just an Iranian issue. This is an American issue—what we're all about,” McCain said on Sunday's “Face the Nation.”

A woman becomes a member by joining her local club or through a national associate membership. Members of a local club also are granted membership in their state Federation. WHAT

Once an auxiliary of the Republican National Committee (RNC), the NFRW is financially and organizationally independent today. The NFRW uses its resources to:
